Study of hydrogen absorption in a novel three-dimensional graphene structure: Towards hydrogen storage applications

The use of a novel three-dimensional graphene structure allows circumventing the limitations two-dimensional nature and its application in hydrogen absorption. Here we investigate hydrogen-bonding on monolayer conformally grown via epitaxial growth method (0001) face porousified 4H-SiC wafer. Hydrogen absorption is studied Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy (TDS), exposing samples to either atomic (D) or molecular (D2) deuterium. temperature, exposure morphology are investigated related their effect structures chemically bind deuterium when exposed D2. This first report such an event unfunctionalized graphene-based materials implies presence catalytic splitting mechanism. It further shown that dendritic porous material temporarily retains desorbed molecules causes delayed emission. capability chemisorbing atoms after hydrogen, coupled large surface-to-volume ratio, make these promising substrate for storage devices.
